Try this...
1. Develop sufficient speed. 2. Turn sharply. 3. Hold the jib/genoa in place. 4. Should stop dead in the water. If it's still not working, could be because the wind is too brisk and you need to reef. These Hunters have been perfected to go into "irons" when they're unhappy with too much wind. No doubt a feature added for the health and welfare of nervous wives. Good sailing, I wish I had a 37.

Actually....
Don't turn sharply if you have decent speed. You want the boat to slow down first so when you turn it back into the wind, the boat doesn't have so much speed the the rudder overpowers the jib. Make it a slow turn and when you hit about 2 knots, finish the turn. As the jib inflattes backwards, turn the wheel slowly back the other way to fight off the power of the jib wanting to complete the tack. This will put my h376 at about 70 degrees off wind and traveling 1-1.7 knots leeward (SOG from chart plotter). Seems like your standing still but your not. I've heard some say you go windward but last weekend was perfect proof you go leeward. I heaved to in the middle of a narrow channel while I wait on some large ships to clear my crossing path. It seemed like I wasn't going anywhere, but in just about 10 minutes, the channel marker that was 20 yards leeward was about 200 yards windward. If I didn't know any better though, I would think somebody was moving the marker

Ease the main...
The 37c heaves to very well. I do this all the time in 12-16 kts of wind. Make sure the jib is sheeted in tight before tacking, then after tacking around, turn the wheel to windward, lock it and ease the main out. Maybe you are not easing the main. Happy sailing.

Slow Down
I heaved to my Hunter 30 well in strong wind. In light wind, I had hard time to do it. Boat kept going windward. There was not enough wind to push the bow back. What I did was to sail into the wind until the speed dropped below one knots. Then I did. It worked well for me in light wind.

what abou the staysail?
I've never quite figured out what to do with the staysail. Let it backwind like the jib? Turn it loose like the main? Or sheet it in tight and hope it doesn't matter? Sanders
