Heavier bow points better?

Curious to know would a heavier bow help in pointing higher when sailing close haul?

don't think the bow weight has anything to do with pointing. could make the boat more stable in the chop which might help keep it pointed high but it is not going to make it point higher.

FWIW, and that may not be very much, I have heard from a source I can't remember (I'm old, give me a break) that weight in the bow was bad for sailing performance. Also mentioned was that lots of anchor chain in the bow was cause for poorer performance.

I have not done any testing, but I do tend to empty my bow water tank before the others in order to lighten the bow.

I will wait for the real sailing experts to clear this all up.

I suspect this varies with hull shape. Some boats do need th bow pressed down.

The smart way to verify is to move crew, not change ballast.

Takent too far, pching increases.

I agree with Dave .
I believe most 260 owners never fill the water tank .
I find it keeps the boat level and rides better when full. ( 20 gals is a fair weight .)
These boats being relatively light for their size and are sensitive to loading.

In general, boats are better with their (any given) displacement centralized. Weight at the ends of the teeter-totter takes energy to move. It better near the centroid.

On differing points of sail it can be handy to move it around (like aft downwind in most boats under spin), but in general if it does not move, keep it central. If your boat does better with another 100 lbs on board, get some lead pigs and mount them near the keel. Don't fill your tanks unless its a last resort.

I agree that mass should be centralized .
The way the water ballast 260 is designed , with pedastal steering outboard on a mount and batteries far aft. The boat can start to be stern heavy.
