Only did it once for real. 2 reefs in the main, helm to lee and no jib. Winds at 45 -50. Waves at 24 feet with another 6 feet or so from wind waves. Lee shore about 10 miles away and slowly clawed off. About 20 miles off shore the next morning when the
winds and seas dropped.
One of the scarier nights of my life.
At our next opportunity we to put additional drains in the cockpit. Our cockpits are too big and drain too slow! Waves rolled over the bow and waterfalled off of the dodger. The cockpit was half full at times.
Every 20 seconds or so I was thinking, is this the one that's going to kill us? Also kept thinking we should have bought a better life raft! By 5AM I was thinking is this the one that's going to kill us and I am so tired! Walt

Subject: [AlbinVega] Heave to
How well does your Vega heave to? What angle does she take to the weather? Do you make headway when hove to, or no?
Do you do it the "traditional" way - backwind the jib, helm to leeward? Or under a reefed main? Thanks in advance. I was surprised that a search for conversations with "heave" in the title returned no results!
