Can one heave-to with the 32's rig? Please outline how you did it, or, if it can't be done what the result was.

What other storm tactics are used successfully with this rig?

Thanks, all.

Heaving-to can be done with almost any sailboat if it has a headsail. To do it is very simple. Leaving all sail control lines as they are, just tack the boat and then push the helm to weather. It is a simple maneuver that allows time for resting or repairs under way.

While Alan covers the basic heave-to procedure, I find it easier to heave-to by rolling up the headsail so that it is in the 80-90 per cent range, tacking to back the headsail, and then heading up and adjusting the main so that it is neutral or just begins to luff. Then adjust the and locking the helm to keep the boat to where the boat is slowly fore-reaching, falling off, then fore-reaching again. Some boats do this better than others, but most all boats can do it to one degree or another.

I have tried several times to Hove to in the H28 and it always ends up doping a 180.

people tell me there is a balance to be found in the main and head sails but so far I have not found it. perhaps furring in the 135 to 90 or so might help.

Indeed there is a balance to be found. Depending on the conditions ! Hard to say what is your predicament not knowing what it was like (wind and waves) but you're on the right track. The 135 fully out probably overpowers the main and rudder. Once you find what is the best setting for the prevailing conditions where you sail, memorize it as it will be close to the best setting under most conditions for your boat. Good luck.
