Sailboat life is interesting. Fixing one thing leads to having to fix another. I just got a spiffy Honda 7.5hp for my O'Day 20 so I can maneuver through the marina and canals out to the bay where I can sail. (I replaced an Evinrude 4.5 motor that had no reverse) Now I find that the bracket mount for the motor is dangerously wobbly and there is no way I can lift it up to tranisition from motoring to sail. (weighs 75lbs) Does anyone have a suggestion for a motor lifting system that doesn't cost an arm and leg and will provide an easy lift?

Motor mount

We put this mount on our mariner with a plywood backer on the inside of the hull and it has worked great for us. Hope this helps

4-Stroke

Thanks John. The bracket you link to is not for 4-stroke motors. The motor I have is a 4-stroke. It looks a lot like the one I have now. I need some serious help with lifting this thing by myself.

Garelick

Though I haven't any personal knowledge, Garelick Marine products also have motor lifts. The link below is for a retailer in Boston.

I don't get it

I use the same one as John. What difference would it make to the bracket if the motor is 2 or 4 stroke? Tim R.

2 stroke vs 4 stroke

Weight. For the same HP, can be twice the weight (or more).

Makes sense

Maybe they should list the allowable weight range instead. The stronger model may work with a lower HP 4 stroke. BTW, Phitchcox, what kind of boat do you sail? Tim R.

Pulley System

In doing further research I found that some folks use a pulley system to help raise their motor while under sail. Has anybody done this or have a recommendation on a pulley set-up? Also looking at this Garelick system:

pully system

My C27 came with a 2-stroke, 4 stroke was added by the PO. Previous posters are correct ... the extra weight can be a major factor. Also, 4's have more torque which further stresses the mount. Two things: First, Cate, is it wobbling where it attaches to the transom? Or, maybe the wood block/bolts the motor attach to are the problem. If the later, replacing and/or tightening can help. On lifting, my motor mount will marginally handle the heavier 2-stroke, but I can't lift it; the assist springs are too light. So I rigged a small boat vang (4:1 I think) between the motor and the top of my pushpit. Works really great ... my wife can lift the 175 lb motor and she's quite petite. A side benefit is that it takes some of the weight and pressure off the motor mount while sailing/bouncing along with the motor lifted. Also keeps you from hanging over the stern and potentially falling in. Advise if you want more detail. Tom Monroe Carlyle Lake

Tom's Pulley System

Tom-Yes I would like more detail on your pulley system set up. As I am somewhat of a newbie to sailboat set-ups, could you tell me what a "pushpit" is and what a 4:1 pulley system is? A picture of your set up would probably answer all these questions. You can email me at : cate at alteredimage.com
