Heater hoses?

IMG_0167.JPG I checked the transmission fluid in my Westerbeke 12C two and noticed a hose resting on top of the transmission. The bottom portion of the hose actually turned to a jelly like substance from the heat of the transmission. It appears that the hose is not leaking. I thought the hose runs to my water heater but know I'm not sure. The hose is one of two that run from the engine flow controller. I'm confused because the two hoses run to a metal half circle tube so it appears that the flow just returns to the engine flow controller. Looking for someone to educate me on this. I'm new to diesels.

That "metal half circle tube" sure looks like a vented loop. They're to prevent a siphoning that could sink your boat.
Do you have a manual for your engine?

Is that loop picture oriented properly? I would assume the top of the loop should be pointing "up," but then, what do I know?

The loop is sideways in the photo. Now that I took a closer look at my own photos. I think I may of incorrectly determined that the hoses are all the same. The pictures show different coloring on the hoses. I need to check again next time at the boat.

What is an engine flow controller? To have a vented loop i would assume they are from your sea water cooling side...... follow the flow and you will be enlightened! Probably want to buy some new hose and avoid resting on the trans.

Good luck!

We have a similar engine but I can't tell which hose it is by your pictures/orientation. Jpg.167 shows the housing that connects to and from your hot water heater (part #32 in the attached). @Someguy is right, 168.jpg is a vented loop and you can see that it is connected with wire reinforced hose. This diagram should help you identify the correct hose (click on 'complete parts list' for other engine components)

When you replace the water hoses, note what material they are made of. In this case, I'll bit the water hose is EPDM (most are), which turns to jelly in contact with oil or diesel. It's great stuff for water, but must be routed thoughtfully. Laying it on top of the transmission is unacceptable.

In your first picture your hoses are double clamped, but the second clamp on the right side of the picture on both hoses is not clamping to a fitting it is just compressing the hose itself and causing a restriction in the flow. If there is no underlying metal to support the clamp it is worse than useless.

Checked on my boat today and took a better look at the hoses. The two hoses in my first and second picture where confirmed to be my supply and return line to my hot water heater. Even though the hose is not leaking it would probably be best to replace it. It's a long run to my heater probably need around 20 feet of hose. I would imagine that I'm going to lose a lot of coolant when I replace the hose. Any suggestions on how to minimize the loss of fluid.

Another thought would be to remove the hose from the connection point ( Pic 1) and cut it beyond the damaged area, approximately 3 feet hose length and use a fitting with hose clamps to join the old and new portions. That would be the easier fix but not sure if it's a wise choice.

Thanks
