I have an 89 Mk 11 fitted with M25XP. Recently I decided to replace engine mounts and exhaust riser. I also removed the HX to improve access. The HX is the 3 inch model and all good apart from degraded rubber/butyl mat between the HX and engine block. What is the purpose of this mat? Is it to insulate the HX from engine (electrolysis)? Or to stop vibration? or insulate from engine block heat or all of the above?
Is it really necessary? If so what would you recommend as a replacement material?Thanks in anticipation.
