Heat Exchanger & Motor Mounts

Hi List, I have enterd into an agreement to buy an '87 H31, contingent upon the usual inspections. Had the motor checked today. There are a number of issues but the 2 biggest concerned the motor mounts and the heat exchanger. The HE is very dirty and appeared to have no antifreeze in the coolant at all. The mechanic stated that the HE can be dissasembled and cleaned but sometimes they are so corroded that a new one is the best way to go. He also said that the motor mounts were nearing the end of there useful life and should be replaced. A quick look through the archives turned up nothing on these 2 topics. Has anyone done either of these jobs themselves? How difficult was it? Is there any chance that the heat exchanger can be cleaned/flushed in-place? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks. leak in heat exchanger

If there is no antifreeze in the coolant the heat exchanger is probably leaking the exchanger flows freshwater through coils inside to cool the coolant. Probably leaking through the coils and the antifreeze escaped through the holes. The motor mounts are probably weak I am fixing the replace the mounts on my 86 34 So timing for the mounts sounds resonable for replacement. Not that hard of a job with all the right tools. I have been a technician (mechanic) for most of my life so alot of this comes second nature for me. I would not attempt it with just a couple of wrenches. Something could happen like broken bolts that could require drilling and tapping. Hopefully not but you never know. Tim Welsh H34 Cabo Wabo
