A storm just shredded my ageing 110% genoa jib on a Hunter 31. I plan to purchase a new genoa and main from Doyle. Since the 110% genoa is no longer being offered, I am torn between the 100% jib and a 130% genoa. Though mostly a fair weather cruiser that may include the occasional day trip in winds up to 30 kts. What should I do?

genoa height jib

On most boats, the jib is shorter than the genoa. Yet, a full height jib is very close in speed to a genoa, especially if it will sheet closer inboard and, therefore, point a bit higher. It might be a better sail for you thAn either a 130% or shorter jib.

Hunter 31 Headsails

Andreas, I have a good friend who owns a Hunter 31. As you know it is a relativley tender design with the cast iron keel. We found that the boat was overpowered in over 15kts true wind with anything larger than a 100% genoa. If you have hanks I would suggest going with the 100% genoa. On the other hand if you have a good roller furling system the larger sail should be fine if you get it with a luff pad so it will stay flat when reefed down to 100-110%. Thanks, Bill Colombo Doyle Sailmakers
