Headsail Roller furling

I have purchased a O25 w/ roller furling jib. My second O25, butfirst furling gear. I believe it is an older CDI unit. It has aninternal halyard in the luff that is very long when the sail israised. Just above the drum is a cleat port & starboard on thefurler, and at the base of furler there is an opening that allows aline to feed through. I assume the tack of the sail (which is fittedw/2 small lines) ties at the base and that the halyard somehow isattached to one or both of the jamcleats abouve the furler, but belowthe luff. There is a lot of extra halyard at this point with the jibraised, I am not sure what do with it? Any input on the arrangementsI described?Thanks.

Hi JoshI had a similar system on my 272. The halyard feeds back down in the second track and there is a metal slide that can be fastened to the halyard. This slide has an eye that potrudes from the track. When the jib is fully hoisted this slide should be at the bottom of the track with enough line to fasten to the cleats. A second line is fastened to the slide and is used to lower the sail and is detached when the sail is hoisted. I did not have a slide nor could find one so I attached the end of the halyard to the top of the jib and hoisted the excess line back up the mast with the jib. In effect the halyard was one line. Both lines were pulled tight and fastened to the cleats. Not the best looking but it got rid of the excess line.Charlie

Check the Manual

The manual (see link) for the current CDI Furler to fit the O'Day 25 (FF4) gives some good pictures. I suspect the original halyard has been replaced - it should be shorter so that at full hoist there is maybe 18" left at the bottom to tie up. When taking the sail down you tie a messenger line to the halyard so you can hoist again. I made the mistake of raising my FF4 with the halyard in the UP position, which is a pain. Good luck.
