hi folks, todays question..... on my furlex headsail the last two or so feet are not attached to furler. two sailmakers said this is correct. it does not seem right to me. should entire sail be connected to track on furler? thanks alan

This is correct

Just as the sailmaker said, it is correct. IMHO, by not having the last 2 feet or so in the track, you allow the sail to get a better shape as it being furled. The foot of the sail is being "rolled in" first and creates a bit of the stretch along the whole tack of the sail, by this giving a better shape.

Look For a Feeder Slot

The furler has several luff extrusions of probably 4 or 5 feet in length and they're connected together. The lowest luff extrusion should have a feeder slot - look at the grouve the luff tape is in and there will be several inches that look different that all the rest. This section should be just above the drum unit. To get the sail into the fuff extrusion there had to be an entry point and normally this is a few feet above the drum. They put it there because when changing sails there has to be room between the sail on the deck and the feed slot otherwise it'd be too difficult to change sails. Does this make sense? What the sailmaker said is correct. Any more questions???
