I have a hunter passage 42 with 2 heads. When we return to the boat after a few days away we find that the heads have filled to the brim with dirty water. This still happens despite emptying the holding tank before we leave. We have replaced both joker valves. When we are on the boat and using the heads regularly there is not a problem. Any advice on a solution would be most appreciated.

close the trhu-hull

Sounds like the water is slow leaking through the head from the trhu-hull. Just close the thru-hull upon leaving and you should be fine.

Your intake valves are slowing leaking, which means that it is probably time to rebuild the heads. However, you should always close all thru hulls when you leave the boat for a long time.

Paul, our 1991 P42 has a solenoid operated...

siphon break for each electric head. The aft head break is located on the starboard bulkhead in the engine compartment. The forward one is located behind a panel on the starboard side of the most forward cupboard. These could be the source. Either way I always keep the raw water seacocks closed except for flushing. Vented Loop

If you do not have vented loops in the raw water supply intake hoses it might be wise to add them. Without them you have a problem as water can seep through the intake and overflow from the toilet if the bowl is below the water line. After twice experiencing this problem I installed a strainer in the intake hose in addition to a vented loop. Together they solved my problem. I have been surprised how much debris is captured by the strainer.
