heads and chain pipe

I am replacing the original Brydon heads with an almost identical
model by Jabsco. The original set-up had the heads outlet feeding
directly into the outlet seacock with only a 3" piece of piping
joining the two. It looks fairly simple to replicate this set-up but
the instructions for the new heads say that I should put in a vented
loop. The way things are laid out in this area of the boat would make
that very difficult if not impossible. Is it likely to be a real
problem if I replicate the original setup? I do intend to put a vented
loop in the inlet side.

Chain pipe

The cover for my chain pipe was missing when I bought the boat - it is
a 36mm inside diameter circular pipe - is it possible to get
spare covers? Where would I go to get one fabricated? I don't want to
replace the whole fitting.

Thanks
John

Hi John

I did a similar thing 2 years ago, fitting a complete new head. The head
was almost identical, fitting into the existing holes. (I went to buy the
service kit, but with a service kit being £40 and a complete new head being
£75 I decided to go the whole hog)

I fitted using new pipes but same route, and yes the instructions told me to
fit a vent etc but I thought that Id end up chopping too much up to make it
fit.

Weve been cruising this summer for 10 days, during which time the inlet and
outlet sea cocks never got turned off (However I always turn off when
leaving on the mooring for peace of mind) and we never once had a problem,
just turning the lever to dry bowl and pumping dry. Lots of sailing in
F6s etc round Channel Islands.

In my personal opinion I would say replace with the same as the original
factory fitted system. If you want to be ultra safe turn on and off sea
cocks each time you use it.

I adopted the If it works dont change it theory and weve experienced no
problems to date.

Suggest you ask Steve Birch about the chain pipe flap Lost mind years ago
and to be honest never got round to replacing as I have not noticed any real
difference.

Happy sailing

There will be a meeting at the boatshow. I will work out a day some time
and let youaqll know asap.

John.

Replaced my heads earlier this year with a Jabsco model. Vented loop can
be fitted to the outlet if you move the heads slightly to one side (aft)
and fit the vented loop on the cabin bulkhead. If you fit a vented loop
in the inlet don't put it between the seacock and pump as you will just
suck air into the system. The loop goes between the pump and the bowl.

Can't see the point in fitting vented loops myself as the bowl is above
the waterline so barring a major blowout the boat is not going to flood,
but that what seacocks are for. Only done mine as I had to get an
insurance survey and it was one of the recommendations.

John: re the head: I did the same swap, no vented loop, no holding
tank (yet). I found the Jabsco outlet did not quite line up with the
thru hull to make a leak-proof seal...the hose is not long enough to
allow proper alignment.
On the Jabsco you can rotate the base to have the outlet on the
other side, so I did that and simply ran a longer hose behind the
head to the thru hull. Works like a charm.
