I am replaced trim in the cabin of a Peterson 34 which required removal of the headliner. Now that the repairs are finished, the headliner need to be reinstalled. The problem is that the headliner has shrunk by approx an inch. Does anyone have any suggestions to relax the headliner fabric in order that it can be streched easily back in place?

use the admirals hair dryer

to warm the material as you start to strech it out again.

Hair dryer

The hair dryer and heat from a halogen work light relaxed the headliner enough to stretch it enough to staple back in place.

My headliners are

some sort of vinyl stretched over plywood panels. Some of the plywood is pretty well shot due to leaks. I'm going to cut new plywood panels using the old ones as templates. What can I use to replace the old vinyl? It's aged and faded and stained. I was thinking that something like a vinyl shelf material applied using a spray adhesive to the plywood and stapled on the back of the plywood panels. Am I on the right track??

FRP panels to replace the plywood

Smitty, Home Depot and Lowe's are both selling FRP (Fiberglass-reinforced plastic) panels that are perfect for this application. They come in 4x8 sheets (HD will cut in half if you need smaller), have a shiny side with an imitation leather-like pattern and a flat back, can be cut with sturdy scissors, are rigid enough to hold their shape on the ceiling but lighter than plywood, won't absorb water, etc. I cut out new ceiling panels from this stuff using my old plywood pieces as a template and decided the pattern was good enough that I would forego the vinyl covering (but you can still glue the edges of the vinyl to the backside of these if you want to). The panels come in white or almond, and if you want to see what they look like I think the Home depot stores even use them as paneling in their own store rest rooms. About $27 for a 4x8 panel...
