Headliner (for lack of a better term)

I have an 88' Catalina 36. The headliner (molded interior ceiling) is beginning to show some age, and also some stains, from some less than professional varnish maintanence. Since there is no traditional headliner to replace, has anyone ever tried to paint these surfaces?

Interesting idea

It never occurred to me to paint the cabin ceiling... but I don't see why it couldn't be done. You could probably brighten up the interior. Have you already tried cleaning it with the host of products out there? If you used a primer &/or scuffed the area to be painted, I don't see why it wouldn't work. But then again, I haven't tried it. Let us know how you make out! Trevor

Headliner Cleaning

Not quite sure I understand the varnish part. The headliner is fiberglass. With the wealth of cleaning agents available, it would appear that one or some of them should be able to be used to clean up the inside of the boat. Don't know if you've tried this already.

Headliner

Thanks Stu & Trevor, Regarding the cleaning products, I have tried a few, but nothing that has brightened up the surface. The varnish stains are what really bug me. They are around almost every point where the wood, and fiberglass meet. The result of the not taking the time to tape up the interior properly. I have not found any cleaning product that does anything for them. The fiberglass surface itself is not smooth. It has a recessed textured finish (sorry don't know how else to describe it). I am thinking of finding a spot to do a little testing. Thanks again for the responses

Painting

I am in the process of repairing my headliner now. I removed the old headliner and glue (tough job) and sanded the surface. I primed it with the Kilz mildew resistant, heavy duty primer. It held very well. However, I did not paint over it. I am installing 3/8" closed cell foam as an insulation and padding. I am covering that with a viynl perforated headliner material like you would find at Defender. I have about half the foam up and it is holding and insulating well. Hope this helps.
