Hello everyone, maybe someone can point me in the right direction. My wife and I are going to Treasure Island for a week in April, we both teach and hopefully will retire in 5 years. Anyway, I'm looking at chartering a sailboat with captain for 2-4 hours and would like your imput if possible. I would like to look at a boat in the 38 ft range to sail on while we're down there. We have a 25 ft Mac right now and sail on a lake here in Upstate NY. Should we pay a charter and captain or look for someone that would take us out and I would pay for their services? Thanks!

Catalina 27 . St. Mary's Georgia
While you are down there, set aside an afternoon to walk through Don's Marine Salvage and Horne's Marine Salvage. Two of the top 5 marine salvage yards on the east coast only a couple of miles from each other.

Edit to add, my wife and I are also both teachers and will be there April 4-7th.

Why not charter bareboat? I have used this place twice : http://www.sailingflorida.com/ . Once in a Hunter 46 and another time a Catalina 34, both new. Advantages are: less expensive without a captain, do your own thing, can stay in Tampa Bay if the Gulf riles up, close to the ICW for visiting Sarasota where you can still sail, and just a nice marina in a nice town.

Jerry, you and your wife are welcome to day sail with me out of Clearwater. I am retired, my wife a retired teacher and day sail a couple of times a week. Also, have a small sailing group that tries to sail once a week when the weather gets warmer. Should be warm by April.

I can vouch for Paul. Nice marina, nice boat, and nice guy. As I remember it was fairly quick access to open water unlike a lot of west coast ports. Paul, when I sailed with you was it that boat? I was thinking 30.

Yes, same Hunter 33. I continue to work on it. Seem to spend more time on the engine than any other part of the boat. New cushions this year, looks great.

Time for a new 'YM' Paul. You did see my install in Hunter mods I hope. So quiet and small and light. Almost 300 pounds lighter than the 2QM20 that I replaced. With any luck I will be down to see her in a couple of weeks. Maybe you could get up to Port Richey for an outing.

Did see your install. A new Yanmar would be an advantage. I actually like working on the old one and think it has more than a few years left to run. Please drop me an email (email on this site works) when you firm up your plans, as I would like to come up and see your boat.
