We are planning on heading to south florida this fall from Lake Ontario. I have lots of charts and route plans for the Intracoastal waterway from Norfolk on and for the Erie Canal and Hudson River. I am unable to find information on the route to take from New York to Norfolk. Can anyone offer some advice or a website that might steer me in the right direction please?

Cape May to. . .
From New York Harbor you must sail "outside". There are a couple of places that you can get in if weather catches up. But Cape May, NJ, is your destination. Then you have to decide whether to sail "up" the Delaware Bay and then through the canal into the Chesapeake. If you are in a hurry then I guess you would continue to sail the Atlantic. One source might be "Intracoastal Waterway Facilities Guide, the Best East Coast & Gulf Coast Marinas." I think it is from Boat US. It illustrates all the inlets in NY and NJ as well as the rest of the east coast. Like you my chartbooks start at Norfolk. You could simply buy a few east coast charts from someone like Landfall Navigation: http://www.landfallnavigation.com/charts.html

Southbound East coast
Ed has it right. Leave NY and travel outside to Manasquan inlet. Another long day will get you to Atlantic City and later Cape may. It took me 14 hours from Manasquan to Cape May doing seven knots. The ICW in Jersey is a mess and your best bet is going outside if weather permits. Most other NJ inlets require local knowledge. Another full day from Cape May to the C&D canal up the Delaware River to get to the Chesapeake doing seven knots. Playing the tides will help

fond memories
brings back fond memories. our 81 hunter 30 took us from norfolk to new london, ct. we did the chesapeake, then the c&d canal to the delaware (a terrible place to cruise, imho), then offshore from cape may to the new york harbor. agree about the icw in jersey - we thought about it but after getting stuck a couple of times, we went offshore.
