Nice N Easy

What a year. After Katrina, and loosing the house, I ended up in Connecitut to visit a lady friend. Friday we leave here on her boat, an Allmand 31, headed south. Name of the boat is Eva's Journey, and it seems quite appropriate. Planning on doing the ICW most of the way, and spending Christmas in Key West. I will post from time to time on our progress, and any one having any input it will be welcome. Neither of us have any working knowledge of this area, so any advice will be well accepted.

Remember the orange squares

Remember the IWC markers have orange squares on them.

Very sorry...

...you lost your house. The devastation is simply awful, and none of us outside the Deep South can truly appreciate what you've been through. Here's hope the sail will take your mind off your troubles, if only momentarily.

A Journey of a Lifetime

Take it from an old ICW cruiser that your journey will shake out the cobwebs, free your spirit and put any despair well behind you. Its one of America's great magical journey's and you will feel safe and certainly be in awe of the sights, the beauty and the great challenges ahead. Needless to say, their are available more references, stories and guides written on the ICW then years before, and you can now literally map out every marker, anchorage, marina, restaurant, point of interest and weave your way successfully through rough spots, bridges and into the gorgeous Keyes. I do strongly recommend, extended stays in Charleston, SC (city marina), Savannah, Ga (Thunderbolt), and St. Augustine (city marina). Those are just of few of the southern ports that offer much and a must see! Have a great and safe journey. Bob

include me

I did this last year. Good places to hit were New York City, Baltimore, Annapolis (and Eastport), we didn't hit St. Michaels but it's a great place to hit, Newport, the restauant on the canal between the Delaware and the upper Chessy, Charlestown, and any small place on the way. I was bored in Solomon Island (the bars close at 9), Oriental, and a few other places that were just stops. Butoverall, explore everything. And take a bicycle or two. Buy one now! Even a used one is good as it will rust anyway.

Have your friend check her boat insurance

Have your friend check her boat insurance as she might find it void once she leaves her general sailing area. You will find it near impossible to secure insurance south of South Carolina. You might not want to sail naked. Fair winds

Bike

I agree a bike is essential in getting around many places you may stop. I got one last year at a yard sale for $15 and it came north in the spring, sat in the rain all summer in RI and is now on its way back south- rust helps to ensure no one would want to "borrow" it on you and I find I never need to lock it up. I transport it in the dinghy. Have learned it likes to take dives off docks- have hauled it out of the water twice so tie it up if you keep it on a dock to keep it out of the water or to pull it out if it should go for a swim!
