I am a solo sailer on the great lakes, but am about to embark on my first long journey. If anyone is interested in sailing from Lake Erie to Savannah Ga. or just a portion of it, send me an email. Plan to leave late August, sailing most of the way, except when demasted for the canal. Will anchor before dark, or use city docks on canal. May do a couple overnighters on the Atlantic before reaching the Chesapeake, where i will re-evaluate the weather for the last leg. All I ask in return is to share in the expenses, chores, on duty time, no smoking aboard, and to wait until anchored before tipping the rum. any questions? topcat7475@yahoo.com

It's a great trip Tom. Some of the lock entrance walls have lightpoles. We found 110v outlets at the base for power. A really cheap way to travel but we did a lot of town docks also. The mast work is the only downside. Leaving late August won't give you much time to explore the Chesapeake but maybe you have to get to Savannah. So much to see and do there. You will have to hurry to make the Annapolis show. We found a great anchorage just south of there and had a great time during that week. Hope you can make it there.

How long does it take to drop & secure a large mast for travelling the Erie canal? Talking a 42' boat with a keel stepped mast. Probably over 60' long.

gettinthere - unsteping the mast is no big deal. I had RCR Skyway Marina (www.rcryachts.com) in Buffalo do it & they are great. I built my own supports for the mast & Darrin & the crew put the mast on the supports. They secured the standing rigging by first covering the parts they were going to duct tape with plastice wrap. No stickey residue on the mast or boom. Took 1 day to unstep & another at the other end to step the mast. If you get to Buffalo give me a shout I am in the RCR marina
