Peggy, Just ordered your book. Why is a black tank recomended for use on a fresh water flushing system ,and where would I get one for a 1977, 27' catalina, that requires a entire refurbishment of the head. Can I use a flexable tank for the fresh water? B

don't let the sunlight in. Thats what starts things growing in the water. Some Catalina dealers are now installing bladder tanks for freshwater flushing.

Opaque tanks prevent algae growth...

'Cuz algae needs light. However, algae aren't the only "critters" that grow in fresh water tanks and plumbing...there's a variety molds and fungi that thrive in the dark, especially in a dark DAMP environment...like the insides of the fresh water plumbing. But where'd you hear that the tank has to be opaque (black)? I've never said that...only that fresh water PLUMBING should be. If you're installing a new tank only to supply flush water to the toilet, it doesn't matter whether the tank is opaque or not...so I'd go with an UNvented bladder...tee the fill line into your head sink drain, the toilet intake line into the bladder. When the bladder needs filling, just run water down the sink. Or, an even easier way that conserves your fresh water: just tee the head intake into the head sink drain. Flush with sea water...then, before the boat will sit, after you've closed the seacock, fill the sink with clean fresh water...flush it through the toilet to rinse all the sea water out. Whichever way you decide on, do NOT connect a flush water tank to your fresh water plumbing to fill it. There should be no connection between the toilet and the potable water supply. If you opt not to use the sink drain to fill a flush water tank or rinse the sea water out of the toilet, you'll have to install a fill for the flush water tank.

Peggy, do you have any information on the manufactures of "bladder tanks", I would like their information regarding sizes and methods of hookup in advance of starting this project. B

Nauta, Vetus and Plastimo make bladder tanks

in a lot of sizes..I'd think 10 gal would be a good size for this application. Google those brand names to find retailers and shop price. Since it's only gonna hold water, I'd go with an unvented bladder...to eliminate the need for another vent thru-hull.
