BARRY

In order to keep the femenin side of my crew happy i have to remove the entire head assy on my newly purchased 1977, 27' catalina. This boat does not have a waste removal deck fitting but thru hull discharge gate valve. I want to use a fresh water tank for the water supply through a manual head assy into a suitable holding tank. I would appreciate any suggestions before I attempt this project.

Buy the Book

Barry I recommend Peggie's book. It will answer everything you need to know and save you a lot of typing out questions. Nope, I have no $ interest in her material, but it sure is GOOD. Stu

I've been told a fresh water system reduces or eliminates odors. B

DON'T connect your drinking water to the head!

You MUST NOT EVER connect your head to your drinking water system! You WILL need to install a black water tank somewhere (I believe that the C-27s had theirs under the vee berth, but it may have been under a settee), a through deck fitting to pump that bugger out, and a vent hose (Catalina usually vented through one of the lifeline stancions (sp?)). DON'T use a recycled drinking water tank as the black water holding tank. If you do, your boat WILL smell like a sewer. The black water tanks are thicker construction (and usually black in color) and less likely to leak. Contact Catalina Yachts for more information. They can tell you where they put the holding tanks on your model boat, and possibly provide you with the dimensions / source for that tank. To flush with fresh water (read that drinking water), most people either pour the water out of a container (quart bottle, etc) into the head directly, or "T" the head water supply into the head sink drain. With the head sink drain through hull closed, you run some water into the sink and use that to flush the head. That's the way my '87 C-30 was plumbed. You MUST have an air gap between the fresh water system and the head. Both of these two options provide that gap. Finally, before all else fails, write a note to the Head Mistress on this web site. She apparently knows all. Steve Alchemist C-30T #4764 Alchemist C-320 #909

Decide if you really need that head

Barry, After she who must be obeyed helped me pump out our holding tank <1st time evolution, no external access, sh_t in there for a year> SHE decided we could get along with a porta-pottie. At our first haulout SHE pulled the head and holding tank and left me to grind out the volcano style thru hull, and get it patched. No regrets, we got rid of a smell and one hole in the bottom of the boat, lightened the boat by 60-70 lbs, and gave ourselves space for a nice hanging locker.

Alchemist

Alchemist, where would I be able to buy a BLACK tank? And do you have any othrt recomendations?

Barry, black water refers to septic water . .

or liquids that come out of your toilet. FYI, grey water usually refers to wash/shower water and fresh water is . . well . . fresh. Hope this helps.

Don't know where to buy, but

the black water tanks that were in both my '87 C-30 and in my '02 320 were black plastic. This may have been to easily differentiate the function of the tanks to us commoners. I doubt that black tanks are necessary, but you sure don't want to get them mixed up, EVER! Again, call (don't e-mail) Catalina Yachts in Woodland Hills and ask. They have an amazing set of records, and can tell you exactly what they installing in C-27s at the time yours was built, and possibly let you know the manufacturer. As Catalina no longer makes the C-27 (the molds burned up after an earth quake a few years ago), they probably don't have the exact tank available. Others have recommended Catalina Direct. This company offers parts for many Catalinas, and they may be able to supply you with the correct tank. Best of luck. Steve Alchemist C30T #4764 Alchemist C-320 #909

Many of the tanks on Catalinas were made

by Ronco Plastics, I've attached a link to their very comprehensive website. You can search for a tank by dimension or try calling them, they may know which tank is a placement.

Scope, bottom and finders

A fish finder is not only valuable for hitting "the rock;" it has many useful tasks. 1) A lesser used task is using the finder in navigational purposes. 2) Setting proper scope on your anchor 3) Being aware of what kind of bottom is below 4) Occasionally - catching fish.

Sell that Boat

Its obvious your wife has certain living standards. I have a feeling after you make all these modifications she's gonna pick on something else. When its all done you're going to have spent a bundle only to end up with a Diamond in the Rough. Just tell her you'd rather really make her happy and get her a Bigger Boat someday(say $50k-$100k) with a lighted vanity and watch her appreciation level change. Hell, I've used a clorox bottle and was happy to have had one onboard. Plus I can use it to scoop the bilge, seasickness, change the oil. Now thats service! Studies show that an unusally large amount of 27ft Catalina owners become 30'to 36'Catalina owners after their first of ownership anyways.

Adding a Head Suggestions

Dont hook up to your drinking water! Any backflow & you're supply is comtaminated with disasterous results! I believe there is a particular toilet that comes with a 5 gal holding tank as part of the toilet itself (mounted under the bowl). You will still need to add a pump out fitting to your deck, but it avoids having to get & install a seperate holding tank...
