When I installed a new head in my old boat a few years back, it was in the water so I was not able to install a through hull for the intake. I substitued raw water with water from the head sink that I just dumped in with a glass which worked great. Running some tests with my new head, I noticed that when I set the intake hose into a bucket and went through a cycle, it used an awful lot of water and it seemed to me that was only going to fill up the tank faster. Assuming the vast majority of head uses are urine, what is the down side of turning off the intake and just rinsing the bowl with a glass of water out of the drinking tanks? Obviously, one will need to fill water tanks a little more frequently, but beside that? Head odors can eminate from the intake and this would be one way to eliminate that problem.

short answer is..

it shouldn't be a problem. You might want to make sure that the line from the head to tank is completely flushed at the end of the day and when you leave the boat to help reduce odor permeation of the hose. Others might chime in her with how you can tee your sink drain to the head intake hose and eliminate having to transfer the water with a glass. There is much on this in the archives for the head mistress forum.

Apparently you haven't found the "wet/dry" lever

Pumping the toilet in the wet mode all the time brings in flush water with every pump stroke....so yes, it will use a LOT more water than just pouring water into the bowl with a cup. If you want to conserve tank capacity, use the dry mode except to wet the bowl ahead of use and to rinse the bowl and rinse out the head discharge line after use.
