I am purchasing a new Beneteau 393. 1) What are the typical upgrades people on this site have made to improve the biological environment in the holding tanks (e.g. larger vents ?) or otherwise upgrade to reduce odors that seem to bother some crew (e.g. wives) 2) If you have not upgraded, what areas of the holding tank system do you see room for improvement? Thank you for your response !

The best advice I can give you about controling the head odors is to buy a copy of Peggy Hall's book. You can buy right through this site and it will give you everything you need to know. Congratulations on your new boat Look for us out on the Sound! We are on Angels' Grace a Beneteau 361 Charlie

Factory supplied head is the biggest problem

After having my 393 in the water for about 16 months, with almost weekly use, I have had little problem with odors generally found in many boats. The Jabsco head supplied as standard on these boats, however, is one of the few shortcuts that detracts from the otherwise quality outfitting of the boat. I have had to replace several components of both heads in 16 months. I try to keep the heads pumped sooner than later, drop in a small quantity of KO, and have had few problems outside the mechanical issues with the Jabsco heads.

Jabsco's aren't that bad

I cruised on my 393 for over eight months and replaced one joker valve. Only maintenance was greasing the pump (very easily done) every week and some vinegar in the lines every so often.
