Head Smell when Flushed

When I flush the head on my 1996 Catalina 320 I get a strong sewage odor both inside and outside the boat. Recently, the odor also smells of sulfur. This only happens upon flushing. There is no bad odor in general or if the boat is left for a period of time. I have been using the KO product per your past articles and the head itself does not smell bad. What do you think is the cause of this problem and what can I do to remedy it? Thanks. Doug

Odorlos

Doug, I had the identical problem on my 320. Peggy advised the use of Odorlos instead of KO, because there is insufficient oxygen in the tank from venting for the KO to be effective. The Odorlos doesn't need oxygen. I noticed an improvement right away. I also went to fresh water flushing as she recommended.

Thanks for the Odorlos advice

Pete/Peggie: Thanks for the quick response. I will try Odorlos in combination with fresh water flushing immediately. Doug

If you don't have any odor inside the head

there's no reason to stop flushing with sea water. It makes no difference whatever in the tank whether the head is flushed with fresh or sea water...the only thing that flushing with fresh water eliminates is odor in the head caused by stagnant sea water trapped in the head INTAKE and the channel in the rim of the bowl. In fact, if you have an electric toilet, you may not be able to close the seacock and use fresh water to flush without damaging the toilet.
