Head smell only when flushing

We have a brand new Hunter 376 with a Jabsco electric conversion kit toilet. The head generally smell fine except when we flush the toilet. Then, an awful smell comes out as the water fills the bowl. Does this sound like a problem with the flapper valve on the toilet, a poor designed vent system or some other problem? Thanks.

Phew !!

Betsy, You should read the informative articles that Peggy Hall writes in the Head Mistress Forum, that will answer a lot of your questions and make you more knowledgeable about marine sanitation. I think your boat is in salt or brackish water. I feel sure the smell you are experiencing is from the intake seawater marine organisms. Every boat I have had I experienced the same thing when first pumping the head after not using it for a week or so. When I arrive on the weekend, and flush the first time I experience the foul odor. It is embarrassing when your guests are the first ones to use the head! The smell comes from marine organism little sea animals that are in the intake water line of the head. Once you flush a couple of times and air out the head area and use it regularly you should not experience any smell. I had a clear intake line on my previous boat and the little sea creatures would glow green and phosphoresce when pumping the head in the dark! The other smell you could experience might be the holding tank vent if you smell it out in the cockpit when flushing the head. I personally strongly recommend the head cleaning and maintenance chemicals that you can buy through the HOW emporium from Peggy's company. I use C.P. (Cleans Potties) You will love the clean fragrance, and K.O. (Kills Odors) K.O. is a bacteria that you put down the head and it goes to work in the holding tank if the tank is properly vented and eliminates smell from the contents. Follow the instructions for use! Good luck !!

It's Lake Michigan, not salt/brackish water

For clarification, it's Lake Michigan water, not salt water. Does that still sound like a water intake problem to you? Thanks.

Sounds like sea life trapped in the system

Could be vegetable or animal...but I'd guess something has gotten into the system through your intake and is dead and decaying. First, disconnect the intake hose at both ends (close the seacock first!!) and check to see whether it's clear (we once found a dead minnow stuck in an intake hose)...then reconnect it at the head only and fill a bucket with fresh water and a heavy dose of C.P. ...stick the other end of the hose in the bucket and flush all the water through the head. That SHOULD cure the problem. If it recurs, you may want to consider adding a strainer to your head intake line.

critters

Even though its Lake MI, there are still bacteria and algae in the water that could cause the smell. Follow Peggie's advice, she's the Commode Queen! (Commodore?)

Smelly Flush

I have same problem on my 376. Never had it before on previous boats. The 376 has clean water inlet 1 foot aft of foul water outlet and dead in line so, when boat lays to a tidal stream an amount of re-cycling of effluent takes place - you can see it very clearly and no wonder the inlet pipe stinks. All previous boats had inlet on opposite side of hull from outlet. I guess the builders had been longer in the business. Regards, Don Alexander
