The head sink in my 37C is the original fiberglass molded sink. The gelcoat is cracked, and it looks pretty bad. What have people done to replace/upgrade? I was considering a regular sink from Home Depot, with perhaps a cultured marble or solid surface counter - the space is small, so using a high-quality material won't add much to the cost/trouble.

I think that is the right approach. Too bad, I like the design of the original with the molded in soap dish, etc. I have no experience with cutting that faux marble. But anything we choose will have to be cut to fit. And obviously the right time to replace the cheap faucet assembly. Maybe add a seacock to the drain? When I had a bathroom remodeled I had one custom made. I wanted the sink bowl to be offset. Do not remember the cost as it was rolled into the total. Might be worth a call to a kitchen/bath company. Biggest job will be removing and reinstalling the teak trim I think, replacing the bungs. It is also when I will paint the "wallpaper". I tried a coat of offwhite using masking tape. I like the results but it will look better if it is painted with the trim off. Let us know what you choose. Maybe a picture or a link to the Home Depot/Lowes page? I notice on their websites only full vanities, not just the tops. And they all seem to have a splash back which we cannot have. Guess I will have to visit.

It had the same size sink bowl(15"x10"), the type suspended under the top. The bowls that have a flange and sit on top could also be used. Most of the tops come molded with those back splashes. Cannot be used on our H37Cs. Another obvious alternative is marine plywood covered with Formica or whatever the "in" laminate is now. It is important, I think, to get the offset so that you have counter space on the right as you do now(picture). Finally I wonder if there is a process to retain the current sink? Maybe a spray on 2-part paint for example.

Debra, I own a shop that does anything with boats and our fiberglass guy can do wonders with the stuff. It can be made to look like new! As an alternative to buying new, check out a quality boat or autobody shop (those especially that do corvettes) and get a quote.

Sorry but neither of the pics is my boat. The first one, the one with the "sink art", is almost exactly like mine. My boat was all done in high gloss varnish. Most H37Cs that I have been on have the other vanity's wood look. It is more natural with an oil of some kind. I prefer that, it is not as dark as my varnished interior. But Sanders' interior looks a lot like mine. Excepting the upholstery of course!

The original owner of Good News (formerly Great Haste) - Bob Adams - spent a lot of his time at the Sausalito berth working on the varnish. My notes from him indicate 12 coats of varnish. Thanks to him, I keep it clean, and admire it. The exterior, on the other hand, requires a bit more attention. But it still looks good. The upholstery, on the other hand, is ready for a cleaning. Lesson learned, when offshore in rough weather, kerosene lamps can throw fuel all over the place. Cheers, Sanders
