Head sink drains to bilge?

Is it standard to have the head sink in an 85 Cat 27 drain directly to the bilge, or is there supposed to be a Y valve or some other such to the holding tank or overboard? This puzzled both my surveyor and me. Thanks in advance, Patrick

More Head stuff

ACtually, may I add an amendment to the question on the floor? In the C30, is it true that the shower also drains to the bilge?

No, but the shower drain does.

My 86 c27 "t's" into the thru hull that is also the intake for the head. It is located under the v berth on starboard side.

Does any water back up into the drain?

Using this arrangement -- with sink drain connected to the head water supply thru hull -- does sea water ever back up into the sink? And does it ever do so under pressure?

Mine does not..

I also have a 85' Cat 27 and while the shower does drain to the bilge as does the ice box( something I do not care for..) the Head sink links back to the Wilcox head intake.

Patrick, sea water never has backed up....

into sink. After I found out that sea water can create more head odor from the little organisims, I hardly ever use sea water. I just keep the thru hull closed, run some fresh water into the sink, and flush the head with the sink water. Remember, this is the intake to the head, so there is no odor coming back thru the sink. As far as I know, this was the original configuration from the factory with a marine head. The PO may have changed it, but I don't know why. You can avoid future problems by keeping your bilge as dry as possible. One of my future projects is to install a sump for the shower.

Mine is different

I also have a 1985 C27. I have two y valves under the v-berth. One is for the head to intake sea water. The other one is connected to the sink in the head. Here is my problem: since the thru-hull is below the water line the sink won't drain. What is up with that? Do I have to have the boat healed to the portside in order to use the sink?
