Head Sail Shredded in the Wind

I was at the yard last weekend working on my boat at the MDR mastup storage. When I finally came out of the cabin I saw a loose jib flailing down the lot. By the time I got to there it had already shredded in the 20 mph wind.
I rolled it up, but because the sheets were not attached I had to secure it with its furler line.
If you know the owner of this ~20' Santana you might want to let him know gently that his jib sail is toast.

Sucks happened to me, now I make sure I have a few turns of jib sheet and wrap the spinnaker halyard in the reverse direction. So far so good.

Well that jib was old anyway.

When we roll up our jib, we ALWAYS keep the sheets wrapped around the jib winches, cleated off. This keeps the sail rolled up tight. We used to be in Seattle, where winter storms gusting to 50 knots are fairly common, and this always worked. I saw many boats who would take their jib sheets out of the blocks, and wrap the sheets around the rolled up sail. I also saw quite a few ruined sails.This won't work if it gets windy, as the only way to keep the rolled up jib sheets tight is to keep the rolled up sail sheeted in tight.

I always set up the furler so that I get about 4 - 5 wraps of the sheets around the genoa. I never leave the boat without tying a nylon strap around the genoa as a secondary safety, then I put about an inch of slack in the furling line so that there isn't a chance of the line breaking in a wind storm. What I find disturbing is that the torn genoa in the picture looks like the marina is occupied. Why didn't someone secure the loose jib earlier?

we take all our sails down in the winter..they come off in November and go to be c cleaned/repaired and stored and they come back in April. During sailing season...like the rest of you...the sheets are wrapped around several times

If that boat was on the hard in the mast up storage area, they're lucky the wind didn't flog the sail hard enough to blow the boat off the cradle or jackstands.
