Our headsail sheets would catch on the front edge of the hatch covers most of the time we changed tack. Anyone have ways to prevent this? Tom

Same Problem

We had the same problem on our h380 and seemed to have solved it by always keeping some light tension on both sheets, especially the lazy sheet. During a tack we always leave one turn on the active sheet during its transition to the lazy sheet, preventing it from looping onto the deck. After the tack you can always make final adjustments. It has worked for us. Your alternative is to close the forward hatch(s).

Lazy sheet catches on forward hatches

Yep.. happens every time I tack my H34. Seem there could be some kind of corner plate that we could clip on the hatches.. Closing the hatches is not the solution.. the line still catches on the hatch covers...every time. Not the main hatch, but the ventilation hatches.

Head sail sheet fouling

I made 4 teak blocks with radiused edges and screwed them to the deck at the outside of the corners of the three hatches - no problems now

First tack of the day

On my H34, before I unfurl my headsail, I carry the lazy sheet across the foredeck and run it aft of the forward hatch. It never seems to foul on subsequent tacks. Bob Idler H34 "Cheers" (for sale)

Glued rope

Saw a boat recently that had 3/4" line glued around the hatch covers. Owner told me that it had cured his problem with the sheets.

Try this

A 34 in Houston installed teak strips about 3/4 of an inch thick, tapered on each end in front of all three hatches. The sheets just glide over them. Dave

34 sheet/hatch

I have a furler on my 34 and to avoid the sheet catching on the hatches as I unfurl I pull the lazy sheet in as the sail unfurls and that takes care of the problem. also, before tacking pull a little tension on the lazy sheet. I dont like to add holes or epoxy on the deck to attach a preventive device.
