Head Sail problem

Just bought the boat in May and finding out how much I dont know. Went sailing this past week end and had a problem with the Jib. The Harken furler did not unwind all the way. When I tried to correct problem I found that the Jib Halyard had come off the cleat and the Jib had droped down about a foot. Tried to pull up, no luck and then tried to pull down and same problem. I'm guessing that the steel wire has jamed in the roller at the top of the mast. Somebody please tell me it isn't so??? I had never taken the Jib down after the PO put it up during the survey. I dont know how long this may have been going on. Second issue is that one of the PO installed the bow pulpit. The Jib appears to rub this (i.e. it is lower than the rail). Is there a mod or is the jib suppose to be all the way up or what? Help From a newbe on the block. Dennis Stone #764 SRFK

Jib halyard wrapping?

Are you able to see if the jib halyard is wrapped around the top of the furler? This can be a common problem causing the things to happen that you describe. If it is, then you may possibly have to turn the furler by hand to unwrap it. Then drop down the halyard and examine the part that attaches to the head of the jib and rides up and down the furler. Maybe just some lubrication like sail coat will be required. All bow pulpits rub against their jibs. True on every boat without or with a furler. I do not think it is worth trying to rectify this as the pulpit is a good safety item and it is desirable to have the jib as close to the deck as possible.

Head Sail

Thanks for info on line wraped around jib. I will try to check it out this weekend. Another question about the Harkin furler. There is a lighter line that runs from the top of the furlerup the stay and attaches to something. I couldn't see too well last week because I lost my glasses and didn't have binoculars on boat. Any idea what it is for? Just guessing that it is a line to pull the Jib down when you are in a hurry. Thanks again, Dennis

Jib Problem

Had same problem and a friend told me to buy and install a Harken 944 which is placed about 4-8 inches below the top of the mast and what it does it diverts the lead so that the halyard can't wrap around your roller. Of course you'll have to climb up the mast or have the boat yard do it. The piece cost about $45 and it fixed my problem!
