According to my manual...

My owners manual says "I (Foretriangle ht) 42'0" " which I think is the measurement you want, however, if you have roller furling you must consider it's length. Your sailmaker may be best to get the measurement. Also, if you're really lazy (like me) go with a 130% not 150%. I had my 150 cut down to 135 and it's much easier to handle. My boat is an '86H31.

You could measure the sail with your main halyard

Tie a line to the shackle, run it up till it reaches the head of the jib, pull it taut, then mark where the..... ummmm.... tack and clew are. Then pull the line down and measure. I'd say it's a good idea to actually measure, rather than rely on specifications..... I know that my boat ('86H31) got a new rig about 12 years ago - long before I bought it. I assume that it is the same dimensions as the original, but can't be sure. Far better to measure than end up with a sail that doesn't fit, eh? Cheers, Bob s/v X SAIL R 8

If you are putting $2,000+ on the line

do not be lazy and get the sail down. Not all boats were created equal as manufacturers look for components from year to year and utilize what is available at the best quality and price. The advise to go to a 130% instead of a 150% is very sound. a) the sail will be less expensive b) you will probably attain a better sail shape most of the time (a reefed 150% does not provide a very good shape) c) the sail will be much easier to operate (furling and tacking)

They came and measured

FYI, in the last 5 years I have replaced both the main and the jib and in both cases the sailmaker personally came to the boat and measured. And I went from a jib to a 150 genoa. If you are near FT Lauderdale,I bought the genoa from Nance and Underwood Sails(Mack sail). The main was from Supersailmakers.

While most of the major sail brokers

... will have the design specs for most production boats( See Bacons below and click on search my manufacturer), there really is no way to ensure a sail will fit correctly without (1) hoisting it; or (2) knowing how far off the deck a furler tack fitting is and how far down the forestay the upper swivel shackle is (assuming you have furling -- if not you still need to find out your maximum hoist one way or the other.). See link.
