Just put up a new (used) furling head sail on my C36 that is shorter than my original. Looking for recomendations on what to use/install that allows me to raise the sail to the top of the mast and still have it attached to the shakle on the furling drum?

Mine has a Tail

Mine is similar because the furling head is recessed in the anchor locker. To make up the length, a sailmaker sewed in a "tail", or length of nylon strap with a ring on the end. It attaches the same as if it were mounted above decks. I have also seen braided line used. Several loops for strength and attached to the furling head with a shackle.

You need a short wire pennant

After measuring the length you need by hoisting the sail up all the way and using a piece of line to secure the tack, experiment to make sure the furler works ok. Then measure the length. Go to a rigging shop and have a wire pennant made with loops on each end. You need a shackle to attach the wire pennant to the loop at the tack (bottom)of the sail. I once paid a few bucks to have one made at Zannheisers at Solomons I.

Line or Metal, your choice

ag You do have options. If you use the shackle recommended, and, BTW, used by many folks, you should consider releasing your jib halyard tension at the end of each sail. If your sail stretches (gee, wow?) the pendant won't compensate. We have used very thin strong line, probably less than 1/4 inch, and did three wraps around the foot of the sail and the tack fitting on the furler. There's a long enough length to tie an easy loop or two without complications, and easy to untie. That way we can easily release the tension on the luff of the sail before furling, and easily tighten it before sailing after unfurling the jib. I bought a dozen or two feet of the line on a special sale just to hav around for these kind of things. Stu
