Head Replacement

The front head (Jabsco) on our '95 Hunter Legend 40.5 no longer functions properly. Previous forum topics have recommended that head replacement is a better idea than trying to use a rebuild kit. Is this still the case and if so, what model is the best replacement for our boat? We are especially interested in ease of installation with minimum customization needed to make a new unit fit and connect up to the existing plumbing. Thank you, Lance J.

If you want to stick with a manual toilet...

the Raritan PH II has been consistantly rated the best manual toilet under $500 for decades...about $250. Quite a few people here have one..they all love it. Keep it well lubricated...rebuild it about every 5-6 years...it'll give you at least 20 years of reliable trouble-free service. It's not gonna match the mounting bolt pattern...you'll have to fill some of the holes and drill new ones. The discharge is at the front of the pump, so you may have to splice in a short section of hose...not difficult. Neither is a tough job.

Or,

Just replace the pump. Not the smartest solution, for several reasons, but certainly the simplist. Cost: $100 or so. Rick D.

replace with same?

Not sure if your head is the 'standard' Jabsco manual head, but if it is, you can buy a new one for $100 or slightly more. Fits the bolt holes with no hassles. At that price, it's cheaper to replace the head than to do a major rebuild.

Don't let Peggy hear you, Sherry *yks

Just kidding.... We were faced with the same choice, Lance, and opted to replace the Jabsco with the same model. Our decision was influenced by our plan to sell the boat in 2 years - if you're keeping the boat for a long time and using the forward head for more than storage, then the extra couple hundred bucks for the Raritan would be well spent. BTW, find out if you have the full-size bowl or the compact one.... if you have the compact, the full-size might not fit in the space. Then it's another trip to the vendor.... Don't just do the pump. The Jabsco service kit costs $60, and for less than $50 more, you get the whole thing. Packing up the old toilet and depositing it in the dumpster... priceless!!! Also, if your existing toilet is more than 4 or 5 years old, you may very well have to re-drill the mounting holes anyway - I've heard that they changed the hole pattern at some time in the past. One more thing - replacing your toilet is the best time to make sure your vented loops are properly installed. (They don't call me Mr. Loopy for nothing :) Cheers, Bob s/v X SAIL R 8
