Head Replacement

I am replacing the head in my O'Day 23. Presently, there is a rather old (and leaking) portipotti. I am considering upgrading to a permanently installed head (Sealand 911M28) with a real bowl. This model, from what I've read, uses fresh water to flush, sits on top of the 9 gallon holding tank, and can be plumbed for pump-out or overboard discharge (I don't sail anywhere where I can discharge overboard, so this capability doesn't really matter). I'd appreciate anyone's insight into what you all have found to work when it comes to marine heads for O'Day's. Thanks.-SRF

Sean,I would be interested in your final decision as another owner of a 23. I just purchased an 84 this Fall and am faced with much the same problem. Do you know anyone who has installed the unit you are considering in any boat? I'm concerned about odor as well as fit but you may well be on the right track. Sean -When I worked at West Marine we sold a lot of these things. People liked the ease of installation and the 'real' bowl. Nothing to them; they seem to work well. Make sure you have enough room vertically because thay are higher than normal. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Justin,You are right on in terms of the vertical limitations - I measured the distance to the headliner and I think this Sealand unit will sit too high - sitting on the bowl would definitely require some head/neck contortions! This is unfortunate because I did like the features of this particular Sealand unit. Now I'm back to considering portipotties....-SRFJohn - I'll keep you posted.
