We just replaced the manual pump on our head and, for the first time, we are finding a need to lubricate the thing every time we use it. Short of buying the very expensive lubricant from the stores, are there any "home remedys" out there that someone can suggest to help out the situation?

Vegetable oil is a mixed blessing
It lubricates the pump, but it also can create an oil slick on the surface in holding tank that increases odor. Be VERY sparing with it...no more than a teaspoon once a week.

mineral oil
I find that mineral oil works the same for me as "Head Lube" did, for a fraction of the cost. A little goes a long way. I generally only need to use it after I've put KO into the system, which means that I'm using it every time I pump out.

AquaLube
Mineral oil and baby oil (just a squirt into the pottie) work well and quickly, butnot quite long enough. If you care to open the pump (takes all of a couple of minutes to open it up) coat the plunger O-ring with Aqualube (from any swimming pool store), and it will last much longer, without screwing anything up. It's non-greasy and excellent on any O-rings, etc, where a petroleum-based or teflon/silicone based product would not be wanted.
