Each time I leave the boat I turn off the through hull valve for the head. I make sure I pump it until all the water has been removed from the bowl but when I return a few days later the water level has risen half way up the bowl and a foul odor has permeated the head area. What is causing this problem?

Could be leaking from rain

Do you have any leaks around your window above the toilet? If so, this could be causing your toilet to fill up. If this is not it, it could be that your holding tank is full. Just a few thoughts.

Head filling

Hello Jerry Check BOTH thru-hull valves! inlet & outlet. AND the Choker valve in the head. I had a problem with a leaking Y-valve and it slowly siphoned back through to the head. (the head is probably below the waterline) The choker valve was not closing completly and the head would slowly fill with the foul-smelling water seeping back through the drain. All kinds of great buildup in there to leach out some interesting odors for your olfactory pleasure. Add an anti-siphon valve in the outlet hose if it doesnt have one. Replace the choker valve. Clean and lube everything that moves !!!! I ended up with a rebuilt head, anti-siphon valve and a new Y-valve before I was sure I had the problem solved. Fair winds & Fair odors Dave

Vent line problem?

I had exactly the same problem, on my 380 and received similar advise as you have, so far. The culprit finally prooved to ne a "clogged" holding tank vent line. With the vent line clogged, the tank built up gas and backed up into the toilet. Once I replaced the vent line fixture, all was well. Good luck. Andy Mattingly WWW.CALM C-380 #238
