We have a terrible rotton egg odor when we pump our heads. We are being told by Hunter Marine we are the only one to complain of this problem. Our yacht is 17 months old. The problem began after about 4 months. Please respond to ronbobk@aol.com

Check the Head Mistriss Forum

I had similar problem on my 376. It turned out to be the intake water from Lake Michigan. Temporary fix is to run the blue deordorant through the intake line.

Pump your lines on close up

When you close your boat up for the week and close your valves for the heads, be sure to go back to the head and pump the bowl and hose dry as best you can. If you leave water in the bowl, that means there is salt water still in the hose. That water is full of living creatures. The next weekend when you come to the boat, the first use of the head will about knock you out with the rotten egg smell. So, close the through hull first then pump dry. When we do that, we dont have the smell at all. Now, if the smell is coming from your holding tank vent on the outside of the hull, that is a completely different problem and you must go to the Head Mistress Forum and read her article on eliminating head ordors.

You are not alone

We solved some of the problem by not using outside water to flush. We use the pump in the dry position and use fresh water from the sink and a cup. Lookks better and seems to keep the stink to a minimum. Only way to have a perfectly sweet smelling head is not to use it at all. Not a possibilty with us! Hope this helps. Helen P. s/v Silent 'P'
