Head loop vent

More smell,I have a very strong oder in my H310 coming from the head. I have narrowed it down to the vent at the loop.Spiders have crawled inside and have plugged this vent closed.Problem is that I can not get at the loop or the vent from the inside, it is between the liner and hull and the vent can not be removed from the outside.I would rather not squirt water from the hose into this vent and cause water to get between the hull and liner.Anybody have an idea to solve this problem?Thanks for your replys.Steve,s/v The Odyssey (H310)

If the vent in the vented loop is blocked,

It's highly unlikely that it's the source of your odor...odor has to be able to get out. It's far more likely that it's either stagnant seawater trapped in the head intake...or that you've sucked up some sealife (animal or vegetable) that's died and is decaying in the intake or in the channel in the rim of the bowl...or your joker valve is worn out and odor from waste left standing n the discharge hose is coming back into the toilet.Or it may not be your toilet at all...when, if ever, was the last time you cleaned the shower sump? A dirty sump or dirty bilge can smell like sewer if it's neglected long enough. I suggest you read two articles in the Head Mistress forum Reference Library: "Head Related Odors--Causes and Cures" and "Boat Odor Isn't All in Your Head." Both will tell you how to track down the odor and how to cure it.

Peggie is Right .........................

....... Steve, if your H310 is a 98 or 99model. Our 1999 H310 has a vented loop ONLY on the sea water inlet to the head. The head pump discharge does not have a vented loop. The assumption is that the macerator pump check valve PROBABLY wouldn't let sea water flow back into the holding tank and from there to the head. Thee only time I have the macerator pump discharge thru hull open is when I am discharging. Otherwise, it's always shut.Regards,s/v Island Hunter

I am taking Peggies advice, I seem to recall something like sea grass coming through the bowl when I intake water to flush. I will try to run fresh water through the intake hose until it runs clean.I had stop using "lake" water to flush the head some time ago and now keep a 1 gal. jug of water in the head to flush with.I had thought that I had cleaned the line well and maybe as Peggie had stated, something died inside the head.I am also going to add a sea strainer to the system.Thanks again.Steve,s/v The Odyssey (1999 H310)

Similar Problem on my '98 310

I delt with an odor problem for 2 seasons before getting serious about investigating it. I followed the holding tank vent line to the portside thru hull which is accessible through a pannel in the head medicine cabinet. Hunter had forgotten to connect the hose. (There was a clearance problem at the fitting.)The vented loop is also accessible through that pannel and is not vented to outside. (At least not on my boat.)
