Head Intake

Peggy After following your advice, we cleaned out the intake hose to our manual head. The creek we are in doesn't move much - the smell is the same whether inside or outside the boat. After we are out of the marina for a couple of flushes - the smell no longer is there. We removed the intake hose from the thru-hull and flushed it well with fresh water. The thru-hull is not clogged in anyway - tested that too. Put the hose back on and then left for a couple of weeks. When we returned, no smell. However, when we re-opened the thru-hull we were not able to get any water to the bowl. We opened the vented loop and poured fresh water in, but it still wouldn't pump water thru. We double checked the vented loop and the diaphram was properly replaced. What do we need to do to prime the intake hose? Thanks

I don't suppose it could be as simple as...

you forgot to move the wet/dry lever to the wet position? I don't think that just removing the intake hose from the thru-hull and putting it in a bucket of water caused it...unless the hose isn't sealed around the thru-hull any more...did you double clamp it? What's the make/model of the toilet?

Well, no unfortunately it isn't....

The lever is in the correct position. Keith (the husband/captain) did double clamp. It is a Jabsco manual and I am not sure of the model. The boat is a 2005 Hunter 36. Do we need to put anything inbetween the hose and the bronze thru-hull? Like a sealant (not permenent) or something? We just reattached the hose and tightened the clamps.

In a Jabsco toilet, it's a good bet that...

the wet/dry valve inside the pump has hung up in the dry position...failed wet/dry valves are a VERY common problem in Jabsco toilets, even brand new ones, made in the last 5 years. You MIGHT be able to free it up by wiggling the lever a bit, but it's not a permanent cure. It's a brand new boat...the toilet is still under warranty. I'd just ask the dealer to replace it...and as long he has to do that, pay the additional $50 or so (his cost) to upgrade it to a Raritan PH II.
