What type of raw water filter (if any) should be installed on the intake line, between the seacock and the hose leading to the head? Our boat never had such a filter, but it seems that it would be easy to install one and thereby keep out some of the crud and critters that accumulate in the hose. We cruise in Long Island Sound and along the Northeast coast.

Don't

Most boats that I have seen don't have one but many times have thought of adding one myself.
How's it doing in LI I kept H-36 in greenport 07 &08 and in Riverhead/Peconic before that great sailing for sure.

Do you need a strainer?

If you're often in shallow water that's highly "organic" with lots of animal and veggie sea life, a strainer is a VERY good idea. But if you're deep clean water with very little "stuff" in it, you really don't need one.

If you do install a strainer, put it above waterline in a convenient location for easy cleaning.
