I recently had a Comfort Mate manual toilet installed in a '78 Oday 30. The instructions say a vented loop must be installed in the inlet hose if the toilet is below the heeled waterline. Does anyone know if the toilet in this boat is below the waterline when the boat is severely heeled? Not enough wind now to go out and try to figure it out.

Many thanks for advice.

above you say the vented loop is to be installed in the inlet hose. Our vented loop is installed in the outlet hose; i.e. on it's way to the holding tank or the over-board thru hull or pump out for that matter. On the 272 the head is below the water line. I hope this is helpful. Pat

We replaced our old raritain with a jabsco. the intake is under the starboard bunk just and about a ft from the bulkhead. I don't have a inverted loop on it it's never had a problem. the only time it's ever close to flowing over is when the holding tank is full. I think the water line is just below the base of the head.

Thank you Pat. The installer said I don't need a vented loop in the outlet because the diverter valve that directs the waste either to the holding tank or the thru-hull blocks any entry from the thru-hull when the valve is in the holding tank position which it must always be in the San Francisco Bay according to the Coast Guard. If anyone moves the valve to the thru-hull position to relieve himself of some coffee, I hope he returns it to the holding tank position. The Calif law actually requires the valve to be secured by lock so it can not be moved to the thru-hull position while the boat is in the Bay but a lot of boaters say that a little coffee in the Bay can't be nearly as bad as all the dog doo doo that gets washed into the bay when it rains.

Thanks Denise O30. On my boat the wash basin drain thru-hull is a couple inches above the waterline and the base of the toilet is about even with the basin thru-hull so when the boat is level the toilet is above the waterline, but when heeled it appears to me that the waterline is above the toilet. The installer said that the valve in the pump would block any inflow. The toilet manufacturer says that a vented loop must be installed in the inlet between the pump and the toilet, or the valve at the inlet thru hull must be closed. If my understanding is correct, if the toilet is pumped, water comes in to carry away the waste and if that happens while the boat is heeled, water continues to be siphoned into the toilet as long as the toilet is below the waterline. Same physics as back in the 1940 era when the high school crowd was broke but needed a gallon of gas they put a hose in somebody's tank, sucked on it till gas came through(burp) then let it run until the can was full. As long as the can was below the car tank, the gas would flow out until the hose was pulled. Guess I'll have to wait for a strong breeze and go out and see what happens when heeled.
