I just purchased a 1992 Hunter 28. The openings to the two aft lockers is very tight (too small for me to fit through). I would like to replace all the sanitary hoses (head to tank, tank to overboard, tank to pumpout and vent hose). What is the best approach for getting access to the hoses - short of hanging upside down halfway into the locker? Any advice from someone who has actually changed the hoses would be helpful. Thanks!

Changing sanitation hoses
Access to the sanitation hoses is tight. My recommendation would be to find a small friend or woman to climb in and do the work for you. Though I couldn't fit into the aft locker on our 1990 Hunter 28, my 5' 4" wife could (even though one would not have thought so looking at the openings). Once inside movement is tight. However, she was able to un-do all the hose fittings and work the existing hoses off. A little soapy water helps get the new hoses on. These boats came with aluminum holding tanks which should be wearing out about now. Be careful not to break off the in and out nozel when replacing the hoses. The only way to access the holding tank to replace it is by cutting an access pannel in the aft cabin and removing the fuel tank first so you can get to the holding tank. Can you folks please give me some more details on the piping you used? Is it white PVC? Were you able to make all of the bends with fittings or did you have to add any flexible portions? Any cracking or flexing problems? I am face with hose odour problems and until now was only considering expensive marine flexible hosing. Thanks in advance.

They make all kinds of elbow bends and fittings that allow you to get through tight places. All you need to install the stuff is a hack saw, sand paper to scuff up the fitting surfaces and some glue. I have never had any clogs in 12 years of using it. Yes I used regular old white PCV from Home Depot or Lowes. Where you attach the PVC to a fixture I used a short piece of good quality hose (as short as possible) Sanitation hose does not want to slide over standard PVC hose barbs easily. I completed this with some heat and dish soap. SeaLand sells PVC nipples that are made to transistion from PVC to hose. They include them with some of their heads including the Vacuflush. There are available as spares and I will use them on my next installation. Overall the stuff is better, will last longer and cost only a small fraction the proce of sanitation hose.

They also make rubber expansions/vibration joints for PVC piping which are held in place by Stainless Steel Clamps, and can be purchased in any Plumbing supply store.
