Head Holding tank vent

The tank vent line to my head's holding line has become detached from the side of the tank. The line is clogged with the corroded remains of the vent connection, at last some of. The other part is probably in the bilge. The only way I see to get at the vent connection is to remove the aft bulkhead and then I assume a new connection will have to be welded to the side of the tank. The former owner bypassed the holding tank and neglected to mention the problem. I would guess the holding tank is not empty and without a vent I can't pump it. My fear is that this happened a good six years ago (it has been sitting at a dock, totally neglected) and whatever is in the tank is probably solid by now. Would appreciate any suggestions. Marti

Don't even try to repair it, replace the tank!

From your description of the problem, you apparently have a metal tank...and if the vent fitting has corroded into dust, the tank itsel is about to turn into a collander. Replace it this winter with a good quality plastic tank. You may have to remove the bulkhead to do it, but it'll be the only time it'll have to happen. You've also illustrated an excellent case for making any offer on a boat "subject to survey" AND hiring a surveyor to do a complete pre-purchase survey . 'Cuz you wouldn't have had to rely on what the seller wanted to tell you...any decent surveyor would have found the problem and made the seller replace the tank or drop the price enough to cover the cost as a condition of sale.
