the bulkhead to about the top of the teak handle and running down again. I have looked on most of the Catalina 30’ from 1981 to 1985 on Yachtworld.comand did not find any like this. Are these hoses so that the holding tank does not come back into the head? How can I eliminate them? The head was replaced before I bought the boat but those hoses are old. Thanks -CW

Its a vented loop

The hose running up the bulkhead is a vented loop and it should be between the toilet and the y-valve to the holding tank or thru hull. The vented loop is a safety feature not only keeping the holding tank from coming back into the head but also keeping the ocean (or lake or river) from coming back into the head. My understanding is that although they are unsightly, vented loops are pretty much the standard with any sea head. If you think of it, next time you are at the boat, check to see if the vent at the top of the loop is in fact venting. On my C27, the loop was vented but clogged shut so the vaccuum was never broken and the hose remained full all the time, more or less negating the purpose of the vented loop. Also, if you have a head that rinses with sea water, that hose should have a vented loop too between the pump and the toilet bowl. --Greg

Yes there is a vent on the top of the loop

(a hose) going out, the hose does connect to a Y valve. I’ll check tonight to see if it is clogged. So I guess my option is replace the black hose which has some white something on parts of it with some new hose (new stuff is white), or I can try cleaning the out side of it whith something. I just detailed the head. It looks and works great. Cleaned and oiled the teak and put in a new stock faucet.

My hoses are painted

My hoses are painted. Like I said they are unsightly but the paint helps a bit. --Greg
