Peggy, We currently have a PHII on our boat and I am considering installing the electric conversion kit to make it a PHEII. My question is how difficult is the installation?........I will have to run power and a circut at the box but what about the mechanics?? Just food for my decision process......... PS. I dont mind using the mechanical head pump at all...but my wife is asking it for her birthday present....and who am I to agrue with that kind of present request. Thanks Rob

Buy her a nice LCD flat screen monitor

which she can use alot more than the $300 electric conversion which is nothning more than cam motor than duplicates the up and down movement. Takes 100 time more energy than the LCD, use it 1/100th the time you will use the LCD.

I wouldn't do it...

The PHE II is one of the few Raritan products I don't like. Adding a motor to the PH II only replaces the pump handle...it's still a manual toilet, you just get to push a button instead of pumping it manually. That part's ok. The part I don't like is that the motor pumps the the toilet a lot faster and with a much shorter stroke than pumping manually, which means that the pump takes longer to prime--wearing out seals and o-rings much faster, which results in the need for more frequent rebuilds--and also means that the toilet can "choke" on flushes that manually flushing slowly and deliberately would push through. It also draws more amperage than most electric macerating toilets. In short, IMO adding a motor to a PH II turns an outstanding manual toilet into a poor excuse for an electric toilet. The only advantage to it over an electric macerating toilet is that it can be converted to manual again in an electrical emergency...otoh, if you don't have enough power to flush the toilet, flushing the toilet is the least of your problems. If the admiral wants "push button convenience," I'd go with the Raritan SeaEra conversion. It's a true macerating electric toilet, and is available in both raw water flush and pressurized fresh water flush models. She'll love it! Check it out on the Raritan site at http://www.raritaneng.com And if you really want to make her day AND yours, consider adding a Lectra/San (Type I MSD that treats waste and discharges it overboard...legal on the Bay) to the system too. You can check it out while you're on the Raritan site.

Ron and Peggy thanks!

Ron...I bought her the flat screen last Christmas..and yes "we" love it! Peggy.... I knew the electric would be a waste...Im an Amp Hour counter from way back.....But I didnt know about the pump and the rebuilds...thank you very much........ So the real thing to do would be pull the whole unit and replace with a "true" electric head...as in the raritain web site???..I am using my influence over the Admiral to keep the unit as is..... The last question....I already have a disconnected ElectriSan unit but I thought the bay was a "total" non discharge area???? is this false??

Reconnect the Lectra/San

At least you didn't remove it and replace it with a much larger holding tank as someone else here did. I dunno where so many people get the idea that the Bay is "no discharge"...it's not, and never has been. There are only two very small "no discharge" areas on the whole Bay--Herring Bay and the Northern Coastal Bays (see their locations on the MD DNR chart at http://www.dnr.state.md.us/boating/pumpout/ndz.pdf)and they were only established about a year ago. Depending on how long it's been disconnected, I suggest you talk to Raritan about what may be needed to "recommission" it. Give Vic Willman a call at 800-352-5630 x 6. Don't get too excited about the AH useage...the draw LOOKS scary, but actual AH consumption is only about 10/day for two people. Any 46' boat that can't handle that much is way under powered.Another 16A/flush for 5-15 seconds won't break your battery bank either. So give the admiral what she wants for her birthday (if you're smart, you'll also give her something shiny to wear too <g>.)...and the best "bang for the buck" on the market is the SeaEra conversion.
