I've noticed in the various catalogs there is a seat cover you can buy to fit a five gallon bucket. This seams like a very inexpensive solution to all the woes of the worlds boating population. No more pumps to fail, no stinky hoses, no holding tanks, no y-valves, no need to wire tie through hulls shut. Just a seat and a bucket. Pretty basic. Has anyone ever used this and what is your recommendation? Thanks, Dave

You can't dump the bucket inside "3 mile limit"

How would you secure it so it stays put while sailing? Prevent spills while heeled? What, besides cost, would be any advantage over a portapotty?

Bucket or PortaPotty

I'm quite new to boating and I have just bought a small Hunter Medina (only 20ft). On board I have a porta-potty, I think you'd call it, situated inside the cabin in the space of the V-berth forward. Like a bucket but made of stiff plastic with a seat and a cover, it is secured (against spills) to the deck by 2 screws. To tell the truth, I do not know how to use it (LOL). I mean I do not know how to dispose of the contents. There is a small bottle of blue liquid which I think one should pour some of it inside the bucket to get rid of the (smell?) What is the correct procedure, then? If one is moored in the Marina, does one proceed to a Public Convenience and empty the contents there? Best Regards to all.

Contents must be disposed of ashore

It cannot be dumped overboard. So yes, it must be carried off the boat to a portapotty dump station or a toilet, and then washed out. If it is just a bucket with a seat on it, I do hope it also has a lid to secure it against spilling during transport and when you're heeled. If it's a real portapotty, it has a flush water reservoir that you have to fill with water and chemical. The top half is the "bowl," the bottom half is a removable tank. If you didn't get any directions with it, stop by a boat store and read the directions for any portapotty.
