Hi Dave, Catalina's in general are a good vessel with a fine reputaion, but near all will have a 'Catalina smile' at the keel to hull-stubby juncture. I don't care if this yacht is for FREE, you go onto the SAMS or NAMS website and find a good marine surveyor to look at the vessel before buying and get the 'Fair Market Value' from him/her. Either way, it is $$ well spent, and will likely cost you nothing in the long run, if you do buy, but will save you thousands - tens of thousnads if the report confirms that you need walk away.

Catalina 27 is a good boat

I am familiar with the Catalina 27. It is a good boat and it is pretty versitle. I have an uncle that sailed one for 25 years on the Chesapeake Bay and he would cruise it about 3 months of the year, continiously. He had a 1973 with a fin keel and regular rig. He had the dinette model. I sailed on the boat a number of times and it was a nice sailing boat. It was very comfortable. The head room inside the boat is a little low. The V-birth is also a little small. My Uncle and my Aunt use to fold the table down and sleep in the salon. There are many options with the Catalina 27 for auxiliary power. Some have outboard motors, some have inboard diesels, and some have an Atomic 4. My Uncle had the outboard lay out. There are some advantages to the outboard layout (if the engine has a problem you can just take it off of the transom and get work done). It is also cheaper to replace. The inboard diesel has advantages also but have someone check the engine out before you buy it (Get a good survey) I would tend to stay away from the Atomic 4 (it is gas). The mid 80's hauls were prone to blisters. I think that late in 1988, Catalina went to a new process and they have fewer blisters (you still may find some as I have 1 on my catalina 30). All in all, look the boat over good and decide which one you want. There are quite a few around so you shouldn't have problems finding the right one. The other nice thing is that you should be able to find parts for it pretty easily.
