I was pretty much all set to buy the hunter and went to the boat show here in jacksonville just to walk on other boats i dont own and went on a catalina mark42 2 cabin lay ou, tand now im thinking it all over. i use to have a friend that had one and did not really like them then but the new ones seemed to be wider than my house. yet its the same size pretty much as the 44ds hunter. o-well rethinking and looking more is half the fun i think. or i hope. now my wife is mad.

False advertizing?

Couldn't sleep and having just returned from the local broker's open house where I picked up the mfgs sales brochures, I compared the advertized equip with the chart kindly supplied by Bert from Catalina - Appears that Catalina has gone out of its way to create advertizing where I can quickly find at least 5 errors when comparing H with C and 4 with the Benes. What ever happened to truth in advertizing? Don

Very comfy...

We just bought a new C42, 3 cabin. It is very wide, and very comfy on the inside. When we first saw it by itself (not next to other boats), we were surprised by how wide it looks on the water. However, for all its beam, it sails well. We took it out for its first sail yesterday. It wasn't blowing too hard, but it is well balanced, pointed well, and was a pleasure to sail. Warren

Don please remember

That list and "slide show" comparing boats features is ~not~ a Catalina Yacht's document. Its from a private group of personal Catalina 350 owners that compiled them . There were quite a few parts to that list. BTW what discrepencies did you find? That would be very helpful and fair to potential buyers. So what say you....

They are really nice

We looked at a new 36 MK II and fell in love with everything but the price tag.

Catalina cockpits are fun...

As one who's spent a lot of time at boat shows looking at new boats I'll never own, I'm not in a postion to judge sailing characteristics or how well things are put together (the "Elmer's glue" smell of new Hunters is kind of a turnoff), but I can say that the cockpits of new Catalinas are more "fun" to be in than any other models, American or European, from the last 3 seasons. Catalina seems to understand how much of boating goes on there and makes the cockpit a clean, bright, roomy place to be. I found the Hunter cockpits to be stark, lonely, and a little awkward, but not because they're more seaworthy. I think people who like the styling of new Hunters, Tartans, and Island Packets must have been the people who were buying Lincoln Town Cars for their land yachts...

Don, you forgot to mention that they....

Don: You forgot to mention that they no longer mfg a Hunter 356. It has been replaced by the 36. These type of HYPE advertising for any mfg or specialized group never holds much weight with me. I have got to be on board to look at more than whether there is a built in cabinet for a TV. There area always compromises when comparing boats. Besides I think I want a Hylas 46!
