I have to replace the outboard on my H26 – and can get the best discount on a Mercury outboard. Looking at the new lightweight models of Merc’s – the 8.0 hp or 9.9 (both the same motor housing). My question is if any of you have placed either of these on your Hunter 26 (specifically). The concern is the unusually large bracket at the front of the motor that attaches the throttle handle (see photo, near the top). Looks like it may restrict turning the motor – maybe even raising it. Thanks in advance.

Just Take it Off

Looks like it is easy to removeand reinstall when needed.

My concern...

...that it will not allow me to turn the motor to help steer, and secondly, to raise (tilt) the motor. I have a 11 lb propane tank in the well just in front of the motor. (I know – propane next to the motor and the fuel tank. Might as well make it a big explosion. For those of you that are not fimilar with the H26 layout, the well area in front of the motor is open at the bottom aft, making it a faily good place to put a propane tank. Anyone?

Different Question

That is a good place for a propane tank. I keep mine in the anchor locker. The motor looks exactly like the 2 stroke 6hp Mercury on my 23.5, except for the handle. I think the wells are similar and I have kept a 3 gallon fuel tank in the well that did not interfere much with the motor.

Well, after all that…

WestMarine just raised the price of the outboard I was going to purchase by $200. So, guess I’ll look at the Honda’s again.
