We need to haul our 42' sailboat (16 ton) for some bottom work. We're located in Engelhard, NC and would like to find a yard around the Belhaven area. If we can't find one there, Oriental will be the next closest spot. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Roger & Evans

Do it yourself or yard work?

Think Oriental is tough for do-it-yourself. Deaton's and Sailcraft yards are it I believe. Sailcraft might allow do it yourself, but I don't think Deaton's does. River Forest in Belhaven has expanded their yard and probably allows it. Duck Creek in New Bern is my pick, but that's a long way from you. You have to watch the water very closely and with wrong wind can get held up there waiting to get out. Great guys and you can do all your own work. Depending on your needs, you might go to the yards down on Adams Creek. There's a huge one at the 101 bridge, but I can't think of the name.

Adams Creek

Bock Marine and Jarret Bay. Jarret Bay is very big and the better yard. Both DIY if you wish.

Wanchese has several yards

I have always used a yard in Wanchese. However they have been bought out by Davis Yachts. However there are several others; Steves boatyard, outer banks marine maintenance and Spencer Marine LLC. Should only be a short trip from Englehard.

Sailcraft in Oriental

Sailcraft Service in Oriental allows DIY. They will charge a daily amount to be on the hard in their yard - the amount varies depending on whether you will stay on your boat overnight. They are good to work with, and their mechanics are very helpful.

Consider Mc Cotter's

on Broad Creek, Pamlico River, Beaufort County, 7 miles downriver from Washington NC. Managed by Mark Hanley, has a good staff capable of good to excellent bottom work including hull scraping, pressure wash, blister repair and repaint. He will also allow do it yourself, and there are two yards across the street after you are hauled which can accomodate heavier work. Steve
